NEW JERSEY OPEN

Huge congrats to Coaches Karen and Ryan on their 1st place wins at the IBJJF New Jersey Open. I’m incredibly proud of these two for continually putting themselves out there on the competition mats at the highest levels of the sport and win or lose they’re always coming out on top by improving their game, focusing on their attitude/mindset, showcasing their Jiu-Jitsu, and representing our team!

Both of them wasted no time upon being promoted to Brown Belt, jumping right in to competition, getting big wins, and learning bigger lessons! I’m super proud of you guys!

FUJI / IBJJF

Fuji Madison is coming up on July 12th, and is a perfect warm-up for the IBJJF Chicago on August 9th & 10th.

Early Registration for Fuji has ended, but Normal Registration ends June 28th and Late Registration ends July 8th.

Early Registration for IBJJF ends on July 11th, and Late Registration ends on August 1st.

If you’re planning on doing the IBJJF competition, I would recommend doing Fuji as well. Fuji’s ruleset is very similar and prepare you for the IBJJF. We’d like to make big showings at both of these so if you’re on the fence about competing, please let me know and we can discuss your concerns and hopefully get you out there on the competition mats!

As usual we will have signup sheets at the front desk for these tournaments but you will still have to officially register yourself here for Fuji and here for IBJJF if you are planning on competing.

JIU-JITSU IN THE PARK

Our Third Annual Jiu-Jitsu in the Park Open Mat & BBQ is here! This is always an amazing time with friends, family, all of our wonderful members, and of course JIU-JITSU – we will have an entire ring of mats on site! Grillmaster Ryan will be cooking up a storm while you work up an appetite on the mats or socializing with friends. This event is exclusively for Sanctuary members (and their guests!) and we ask that you RSVP here

It will be held rain or shine at the Warner Park Rainbow Shelter on Sunday, June 29th starting at around noon. Because of this event there will be no Women’s Class on that Sunday.

Like all of our Open Mats, feel free to bring a Gi or No Gi gear, it’s totally up to you! If you’re not into rolling outside, that’s totally cool: come and eat some food and hang out. We hope all of you can make this!

SUNDAY WOMEN’S CLASS

A reminder that Women’s Class on Sundays has been rescheduled from starting at noon to starting at 10:30am. We hope that this will allow more people to attend and still enjoy the majority of their Sunday! Remember that every third Sunday of the month is Women’s Open Mat. On that day, the Open Mat will start at 10am, just like our Saturday Open Mat. If you have friends that train at other academies, please welcome them to this Open Mat! If you have any questions, please contact Karen.

Fundamentals: last week in Fundamentals we worked on recovering the Guard (Open, Closed, and X-Guard) when our opponent has our back in a variety of configurations, opening the Closed Guard and Passing with a Shin Staple or a Torreando Pass, and attacking the Cross Collar Choke from the Mount.

Advanced: in Advanced class all last week we reviewed some of the incredible Waiter Guard transitions, positions, and attacks that we learned at the prior weekend’s seminar with Dom Bell.

No Gi:in No Gi we this last week we studied Knee Passing into the Mounted position, ways to retain and sweep from the Open Guard, and transitions into – and connections from – the Waiter Guard.

In Kids’ Class this week we focused on a flow drill taking us from our feet onto the mats by safely pulling Guard, transitioning immediately into a Tripod Sweep, and then finishing the sequence with a Torreando or Hip Pin Pass. We specifically focused on the underlying concepts of each of these techniques, how they fit together, and our overall objectives from each position. It’s really amazing seeing all of you put it all together and move with fluidity and purpose!
